What is a cruffin? It is simply (not so simple to make) a cross between a muffin and a croissant. The same buttery and flaky taste and texture expected from a croissant is transferred into the making of this pastry which resembles a muffin. 

The Cruffin Craze: A Match Made in Pastry Heaven

While some people may be new to the cruffin craze, the pastry itself was first created 10 years ago in Australia. It wasn’t until a year later in 2014, an Australian pastry chef began serving the cruffin in a bakery in San Francisco. The next year, the owner of the bakery claimed the special recipes for the cruffins were stolen during a break-in after which time variations of the recipe were used across the world.   

A Symphony of Flavours and Fillings

What makes this odd-shaped pastry a slice of heaven? It is the result of using the traditional dough and butter layering methods used for croissants and a muffin tin (typically reserved for muffins) to create the cylindrical shape and golden-brown exterior.

Our Chocolate Hazelnut Cruffin is created with dark chocolate cream, hazelnut praline, while chocolate montée, and shaved chocolate. We use a coconut cream and a topping of toasted coconut to satisfy our Coconut Cruffin lovers.

Our family loves Bartholomew Bakery! First of all, the products are absolutely delicious. They are like works of art and you can tell the love that goes into them! Can’t really name a favourite pastry because we buy them all and love all of them. The espresso cruffin would be in my top 5 though! We recently bought the Basque cheesecake, and we added caramel sauce, toffee bits and whipped cream to make it restaurant worthy (even on its own its restaurant worthy)! So good we bought it again today! They also make excellent drinks - especially the latte and lemonades. Turkey and Swiss on focaccia sandwich is a family favourite- very fresh and yummy! Not only do the products keep me coming back (especially to try new creations) but the owners and staff are the nicest people you could ever meet! They greet me by name and chit chat a bit - treat their customers like family! I look forward to every visit. We are so fortunate to have Michael and Anthony and their staff in Vaughan!

Feeling gloomy? Start the day with the tastiest croissants in town! Bartholomew Bakery is a gem for artisanal bread, pastry & confections handmade from scratch. Canadian-made, European trained. I was blown away by the pastry offerings on display & couldn't resist trying: - Almond Twice-Baked Croissant- Pistachio Twice-Baked Croissant- Cookies & Cream Cruffin- Pistachio Cheesecake Twice-baked croissants are crispy & flakey on the outside & stuffed with frangipane filling, topped with almond / pistachio respectively. Other offerings were heavenly as well. This bakery is hidden away yet it's no surprise folks keep returning for their quality offerings.

If it's a weekend or holiday and you arrive between 9:00 and 10:00, be prepared to wait, it is a small takeout space, only. The plain croissants and the cruffin are our go to. We've tried a number of other items, but we always end up back with these two. The espresso cruffin is really good, but they make other versions of it depending on the holiday. The multi-grain loaf is also yummy, and they'll slice it if you ask. They definitely sell out of items so don't wait too late in the day to pay them a visit.
